Canadian permanent resident visa processing times
The Canadian Government makes every attempt to process wife, husband, conjugal, unmarried partner or same sex partner visa applications in a reasonable amount of time. If all immigration forms are completed in a correct and clear manner, all supporting documents are provided, and the applicable fees have been paid, the application can usually be processed and approved relatively quickly, provided that both the sponsor and the applicant meet the eligibility requirements and comply with certain unwritten rules.
There are many factors that can increase visa processing times, including missing documents, errors in the visa petition, the need to conduct background checks, the presence of medical conditions, or the decision that an interview is required. Criminal charges or convictions may also increase the time needed to process your application. In addition, processing times can vary depending on the backlog of similar cases pending approval at the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) case processing center and Canadian Embassy overseas.
In general, most marriage and partner visa petitions are finalized within 3 to 8 months. Depending on where the application was submitted, processing times may be slightly longer or shorter than this. In Damascus, for example, most applications are finalized within 6 months, while wait times for applications submitted in Guatemala City may be as long as 15 months.
