New stream for Nova Scotia family visa applicants

Shortages in the labour markets and certain demographics have lead to the expansion of the Nova Scotia Provincial Nominee Program (NSNP).

Nova Scotia, the second smallest province in Canada, is on the far right of the country. The province’s immigration Minister Ramona Jannex spoke recently about the region’s need to increase its population within particular demographics, with information on how it intends to achieve this aim.

Ms Jannex explained, “With an ageing and declining population, we are committed to attracting even more immigrants to Nova Scotia.” The planned expansion of the existing NSNP scheme suggests that an additional stream for non-dependant children of previous Nova Scotia nominees can now be included, allowing young people with parental connections to the region to be able to apply for permanent residence.

Eligibility for the new stream is reserved for children of naturalised Canadian citizens or permanent residents who themselves were nominated for an immigrant visa application, with the applicant having been named on their parents’ original Canadian visa application. The applicants must also have been living in the region for at least three months and be able to prove their intention to settle permanently in Nova Scotia.

An important aspect to the application process is also the fact that applicants must be able to show that they intend to play a full and productive part of the local labour market and its economy, in order to ensure that the aims of the new stream are met.
